Today I cane across up a great review of the Olympus LS-20M HD Video/Linear PCM recorder. This review comes to us from daddoes.com and offers a pretty unique perspective on technology reviews in that the writer looks at products through the “dad lens” and highlights product use in the context of a parent. This is somewhat of an overlooked perspective so I’m happy to be able to post this.

This review offers a top-line review of the LS-20M and focuses on what we feel is the most critical attribute of the recorder, superior audio quality. The review even includes  a video offering some sound samples. Here you’ll get a good idea of audio performance, including capturing low frequencies. For those of you who have any concerns regarding the placement of the lens, our reviewer offers a great demo of how the reverse angle function allows you to capture the perfect shot over a crowd.

Digital Trends Rates The LS-100 “9.5 out of 10″

Some time ago we sent Caleb Denison an LS-100 Multi Track Linear PCM Recorder to test-drive around the Digital Trends offices.  Caleb immediately embraced the LS-100 and put the recorder and its best-in-class mics to its paces recording urban soundscapes and ambient rural audio clips. The folks at Digital Trends were so impressed with the performance that they even used the LS-100 to capture audio for a couple of product reviews. You can check out one of those videos here.

Ultimately, Caleb put the LS-100 to the ultimate test by pushing the limits of the mics in a live music environment. We’re happy to report that the results were “dynamic, clean and true to life.” At the end of the day Caleb called the LS-100 “a nearly perfect personal recording device.” You can check out the full review here.

Blackbird Call Captured With the LS-100

Jakob Rosin, one of our Twitter followers and LS-100 users, was kind enough to send us this great evening call from a blackbird in his back yard. Jakob used the LS-100′s internal mics using manual leveling and the high gain setting to capture this audio.

Many thanks to Jakob for the submission.

Today I found a great video and performance by Finnish Brass band, Novice Brass. This piece, John Stanley’s Trumpet Voluntary, was captured on the Olympus LS-5 Linear PCM Recorder, better known as the LS-10 here in the US. The video was shot on Livio Lake in northern Finland. I am not certain if the audio itself was captured on the lake but, either way, it sounds absolutely amazing.

In Memorium: Jim Marshall

Today I’m putting the recorders down and taking a moment to remember the father of “loud,” Jim Marshall.

Jim Marshall, amplification pioneer, passed away today at the age of 88. Since the 1960s Jim has helped to shape the sound of rock n’ roll with his innovative, and sometimes earsplitting, amplifier designs. Were it not for Jim Marshall, legends such as Pete Townshend, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and countless others would not have been able to melt our faces with those windmills and blistering riffs.

Today we celebrate the life of a founding father of “loud.” Rest in peace Jim and thanks for inspiring thousands to plug in and turn it up to 11.
